Happy 149th Birthday Canada!

Calgary celebrates Canada Day 2016 with free events across the city

Canada celebrated its 149th birthday on July 1, and Calgary celebrated this momentous occasion in style, overrunning the city with free events, displays and performances from sun-up to sunset.

Stephen Avenue was full of buskers, dancers and musicians. Olympic Plaza hosted a dance competition alongside numerous singers and hip-hop artists, and Prince’s Island Park was packed with people celebrating Canada Day and enjoying a powwow held by Bow Valley College.

To cap the day off, a fireworks display was held off the Centre Street bridge, showering the city skyline in vibrant colours and dazzling lights — a splendid way to ring in Canada’s 149th birthday.
