When Mayor Nenshi was running for election, he had YouTube videos that showed the massive infrastructure and services deficit in North Calgary. What has he done to address that deficit in his first year?
The first piece of major infrastructure approved was the Airport Trail tunnel project, which is part of a major east-west link in Calgary’s north. However, in those videos I was speaking about social infrastructure: things like recreation centres, fire halls, libraries and so forth. In last year’s budget, funding was secured for new library branches, including the new Saddletowne library branch. In addition, city council created the new Community Investment Fund for just this kind of infrastructure. Prior to this, there was no dedicated source of funding for community infrastructure. Part of this fund will go toward the construction of a new major recreation centre in northwest Calgary.
