Emergency crews have recovered a woman’s body from an early morning fire.

As of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, the woman remained unaccounted for as fire crews battled the blaze in Calgary’s northwest community of Varsity.

Crews taped off the intersection of Vauxhall Crescent and Valiant Drive NW as police and fire officials monitored the area. Seven emergency vehicles were parked on the icy road behind the caution tape and at least three yellow fire hoses crossing the pavement.

“When fire crews arrived, they started an interior attack and a primary search,” said Carol Henke, public information officer with the Calgary Fire Department.

“Unfortunately, due to concerns about the structural integrity of the floor, they had to withdraw and go defensive with the fire.”FIREPolice and fire crews tape off Vauxhall Crescent N.W. as they battle a blaze and search for a missing occupant. Crews later confirmed the woman died in the fire.

Just after 9 a.m. an interior search of the home was completed and the unidentified woman was confirmed to be dead.

At approximately 5:30  a.m., 9-1-1 received a call from a resident in the Vauxhall Crescent home.

When crews arrived, two of the occupants had made it out with the resident later found dead believed to be still inside.

Blocking off either side of the road, police and fire crews controlled the blaze until the home became safe to enter.

The cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed.
