A fire broke out in an abandoned northwest home around 2:30 p.m. yesterday, Feb. 5.

An investigation will look into whether the home was a former grow-op and had been condemned for mold, according to Ernie Molineaux, battalion chief for the Calgary Fire Department.

Crews received the call shortly before 2:30 p.m. Upon arrival at the scene, the fire was found to have started from the inside.

“Crews fighting the fire were evacuated for their own safety after arriving inside and discovering holes had been cut through the floors and there were high amounts of smoke,” said Molineaux.fireCrews manage to get the flames under control.

Molineaux confirmed with ATCO Gas that, based off of the gas records, the house had been “vacant as early as last December [2012], so we know nobody has been in since then, maybe even longer than that.

“But the rest of it’s still rumor and speculation and our investigators will look into that and determine whether all of this is true or not.”

There was no damage to the surrounding area.

The Calgary Fire Department has started their investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

Correction: An earlier version of this story states the house was a former grow-op. This detail has not been confirmed. The Calgary Journal regrets the error.
