Not sure how you’re going to vote for Calgary’s 2026 Olympics plebiscite? Key influencers on both sides debated tough questions at Mount Royal University earlier today at the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Symposium. Jason Ribeiro of YesCalgary 2026, Erin Waite of NoCalgary 2026 and Olympian Catriona Le May Doan were among the 12 speakers who spoke to a crowd of approximately 100 in the Leacock Theatre venue.
The three panels focused on three questions:
- What is your vision of YYC in 2040?
- What are the economic costs and benefits?
- What are the positive or negative impacts?
The Calgary Journal livestreamed two of the three panels and live-tweeted the event. Watch the livestream and see tweets below.

Looks like @EWoolleyWard8 won’t be in in the first panel, “What is your vision of YYC in 2040?” Must have been a late night #olympics2026 #yyccc

Erin Waite of NoCalgary 2026 says it’s not about saying no to the Olympics, it’s about looking at the bigger picture. She’s more interested in the city investing money in diversifying the economy and create long term change. #2026Olympics

“When did negativity trump optimism?” – Jason Ribeiro, YesCalgary 2026 #2026Olympics

Trevor Tombe’s answer to the economics of #2026Olympics is that it has many benefits, but they’re intangible benefits. Spending on the games will come with sacrifices in other places because we have to reallocate money.
