The undefeated Cavalry squared off against FC Edmonton on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at Spruce Meadows. The first leg of the Alberta Classico, the Canadian Premier League’s version of the ‘Battle of Alberta’ took place in the rain and cold weather. Fans from both sides braved the elements and cheered on their squads. Reporter Peter Brand caught all the action from the sidelines and the stands.

cav vs edm 23FC Edmonton fans took over a section at the Meadows on the Green. The cold rain and wind did not deter the traveling Edmontonians from passionately chanting their team on with slogans that sang, “This is not a library, and Go Eddies Go!

Things get heated early Cav vs FCETempers flared early in the first half between Cavalry FC and FC Edmonton. International Defender Kareem Moses, 12, tries to break up the heated argument. Fortunately, both teams avoided any cards being handed out by the officials and play continued.

First half header attempt Cav vs FCECavalry and FCE players watch a corner kick soar across the goal crease, while Jonathan Wheeldon tries to head the ball towards the Edmonton net. Cavalry FC would later score in the one minute award for extra time, going into halftime up 1-0.

Half time Cav vs FCE Fans filed back into their seats for the beginning of the second half to watch the Cavalry defend their 1-0 lead. Cavalry FC and Spruce Meadows aim to bring a traditional English football experience to Canada with a smaller stadium that holds only 6,000. An intimate and interactive feeling that brings the fans closer to the action.

Cav vs Edm 18With under twenty minutes to go in the game and defending their 1-0 lead, Cavalry Defender Jonathan Wheeldon, 14, tries to head the ball away from his net. FCE Attacker Tomi Ameobi, 18, looks for an opportunity to counter the header.

cav vs Edm cfc golaie save 19 Cavalry Goaltender Marco Carducci displays incredible athletic ability as he stops one of only three shot attempts against him. Carducci kept a clean sheet and propelled the Cavalry to a perfect 4-0 record to start their inaugural season.
