On the job: career profiles

Phil Flegel is a design professor at Bow Valley College in Calgary, Alta., where he teaches a new program called “Digital Design,” a pioneering design course in Canada.

Arthur Kent is a television journalist who has spent his career in broadcasting covering revolutions and wars for the CBC, BBC and NBC among other outlets. Known as “The Scud Stud” for his coverage of the 1991 Persian Gulf War, the Emmy Award winning journalist has earned acclaim for his reporting on world events, such as the Romanian Revolution and the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

Maddie Alvarez is a graduate of the University of King’s College and now works as the marketing and communications coordinator at the National Music Centre.

Jennifer McCormick is a counsellor and an assistant professor at Calgary’s Mount Royal University Student Counseling Services.

Beth Everest is a creative writing professor at Mount Royal University. She initially struggled to write after being diagnosed with breast cancer, but writing about her experience took her career in a different direction.

Doug Dirks is a veteran in radio and TV, having worked for the CBC for the majority of his career. He is currently co-host of The Homestretch on CBC radio, host of Our Calgary on CBC-TV and served as a downhill skiing announcer at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Gwendolyn Richards is a graduate of the University of Victoria, the University of British Columbia Masters’ program and was a reporter for the Calgary Herald (2004-2016). She is now a freelance food writer, columnist, and author. Her first book, Pucker: A cookbook for Citrus Lovers, was published in 2014.

Liane Angerman is editor-in-chief for IMPACT Magazine and notes the path to getting your dream job can be unconventional and surprising.

Jonathan Love is the lead singer for Heebee Jeebees and an acclaimed voice actor. His voice-over projects expand to Canadian Television Network voiceovers and roles such as Obi-wan Kenobi.

Joe McFarland is the host of Calgary Today on 770 CHQR Global News Radio, co-founder of and contributor to Alberta Dugout Stories, and game-day host for the Calgary Stampeders, the Calgary Hitmen, the Calgary Flames and the Calgary Roughnecks.

Nadia Moharib is a reporter who has worked throughout Canada for the past 24 years. Among other publications, she has worked for the Calgary Sun and the Winnipeg Sun, reporting crime and other beats.

Iman Bukhari is the CEO and founder of the Canadian Cultural Mosaic Foundation, a non-profit that works to improve race relations, mitigate racism and promote multiculturalism in Canada.

Jessica Clark is the Bowness Community Association’s communications coordinator. Although she started out her academic career in science and aspired to be a physiotherapist, she realized that her passion was communications and giving back to her community.

Anastacia Jido is Dote Magazine’s Visual Media + Blog Coordinator. Dote is a national print magazine with a strong online presence that focuses on curating a well-styled and meaningful life.

Aaron Chatha is a graduate of Mount Royal and now works as a reporter with Metro Calgary.

After years of trying to find her calling, the owner of Sultans Choice Belly Dance Studio, Crystal Weran, took a few turns to get to where she is today. While also designing houses on the side, she lives for her unconventional career choice.

Nadine Sykora graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science but ended up following a different career path to become a travel video blogger. She started her blog Hey Nadine and now has over 356,000 people subscribed to her YouTube channel with over 40 million views.

Ashely Alcantara is the founder of Lashology, a lash studio at Citizen Salon in Calgary, Alta.

When I was in school, I first got a degree in sociology from the University of Calgary. I began writing for sociology newspapers and found that I loved writing stories.

Karen Owen is a broadcasting professor at Mount Royal University with years of experience in radio and television.

Linda Kundert is the President and Artistic Director of the Calgary Arts Summer School Association and has been a piano teacher and instructor for over 40 years.

 Brandy Faris – the COO of both Boann Ventures Corp. and Cashmere & Camo. Faris started Boann Ventures Corp., a company dedicated to developing customized full cycle water management services. In 2011 she decided she needed more creativity in her life, which led her to start her own blog, Cashmere & Camo.
