Impact Photos
The first year journalism students worked on a photojournalism project based around “Impact Photos.

The earth rotates while slowly gaining more and more eyes while the United States remains uncovered. The reasoning behind this photo is to illustrate the War on Terror since 9/11 and the international spying of the National Security Agency around the globe. Weapons in the background are positioned to emphasize the conflicts created in the Middle East due to the War on Terror.

The idea of learning by "old-fashioned means" has become lost in today’s society. People in the 21st century have become far too reliant on their phones, tablets, and computers to aquire knowledge. The long-forgotten book dusted with leaves is meant to show that people have moved on from traditional ways of learning. This same book, as well as hundreds of other novels, can now be stored on a device much smaller and lighter. Humankind is moving forward and forgetting the old ways of retrieving information.

People are bombarded daily by advertisements that tell them what they should look like and how they should live their lives. This photo is a protest against this notion. People shouldn’t feel targeted when a magazine ad tells them how they should look. Instead, burn it out of the mind.

Back to the Future
Driving through the night is like being in a trance. An endless stream of lights, signs and reflective lines pass behind our eyes warping into a kind of tunnel as we move forward in both space and time.

Depending on one's circumstance, time can pass at rates seemingly fleeting and sweet, or drag by torturously. I became fascinated with the idea of capturing passing moments in one still image. Observe the fleeting seconds in the photo, or analyze at a slower rate, each second in all its relevance.

While I was taking photographs of the mountains, I knew that the images would be far from original. I needed something more. I was driving home and decided to take one last look at the beautiful mountains. That is when I noticed my side view mirror was the perfect frame for my photograph. The photograph represents the beauty behind us that is never fully seen.

I wanted to take a photo that would make someone do a double take. I had seen smoke grenades used really well in photography before and figured I'd give it a shot. I wanted to give the photo an air of mystery by not showing faces.

The main message of this photo is to depict how the internet and computers in general have arguably made us closed and isolated compared to broader communications in the past, even though it helped us with the spread of information,

Imagine life without man-made light – with no light bulbs, car lights, or lit up electronic screens. As a society, people have become dependent on artificial light. Their entire way of living has been shaped by light and people take it for granted every day. With this photo, my goal was to make people think about and appreciate the light.

The idea behind my photo is to show where we stand as human beings. In today’s world there are many injustices. People are deprived of basic needs, live in a war torn countries and don't have access to proper aid. The message I am trying to convey with this photo is that we are slowly losing the ‘human’ in humanity. We fail to put other peoples situations into perspectives, we live with the mentality, “If it isn’t my reality, it isn’t my problem.”

Over time nature has the ability to overtake the man-made world. This photograph serves to capture the struggle between two opposing elements in a captivating, yet simplistic way. The impact of this photograph comes from the concept of time, and the raw power of the natural world.

Illusions in reflections
The idea came to me to portray nature in its own crystal clear reflections when I saw the sunset perfectly reflected in the Mount Royal pond. What better way to show the beautiful impact nature has on us than taking myself from a city pond to our mountainous backyard? Such photos feel easy and natural for me to execute, I feel at home surrounded by wilderness yet it still leaves me in awe; nature has so much to teach us.

I think it is very important to be who you are, not how other people want you to be. If that is different from others, that is okay.
