Largest hockey tourny in the world wraps up in Calgary
The 42nd annual Esso Minor Hockey Week wrapped up this past weekend and once again gave fans of minor hockey something to cheer about.
Over 8600 players on 507 teams playing in 52 different divisions competed in a whopping 720 hockey games over the week long tournament to once again cement itself as the largest hockey tournament in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
“It was a fantastic week and tremendous successes for all that were involved,” Todd Millar, the president of Hockey Calgary, said. “To show up and see them (the kids) receiving their medals, being placed around their heads, that’s a pretty special moment for all involved, from players, all the way through to grandparents, cousins, relatives in the stands.”
Players ranging from Atom to Junior C competed in the week long tournament. Millar said that most of these players consider this tournament to be a bigger deal than the city championships that happen at the end of the season.
