Edward Gao | Libertarian

NoseHillRiding Libertarian Gao

Edward Gao is running for candidacy in Calgary’s Nose Hill riding for the Libertarian party. From Charlottetown, Gao travelled to Toronto in search of an engineering degree which he succeeded in receiving from the University of Toronto. Now, while working for TransCanada and as his brother as his agent Gao looks to become the newest MP in Nose Hill. Gao defines politics as, “A way to organize society to use government to defend rights and freedoms and achieve economic prosperity”.

Bruce Kaufman | NDP

NoseHillRiding NDP Kaufman

Kaufman graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Education and Physical Education. He worked as a Calgary middle school and high school from 1992 onwards, teaching Math, Science, and Physical Education. He represented his school in the Alberta Teachers’ Association for 16 years and has done many volunteer hours with the Council of Canadians and Calgary Pride. He was also a member on the board of directors of the Marda Loop Justice Film Festival for 5 years, and is currently still a volunteer for the Calgary Basketball Officials Association. Kaufman says, “Politics is working everyday to move our country forward.”

Michelle Rempel | Conservative

Rempel has been active in Canadian politics for many years now. She has a lengthy resume and has won several awards over the years, including the Maple Leaf Award. In 2011, Rempel was appointed the representatives for Calgary Centre-North in the House of Commons and since then she has been appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment and Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification in the Cabinet, making her the youngest female in Cabinet in Canadian history.

Prior to becoming a politician, Rempel was the Director of the University of Calgary and has also worked at the University of Manitoba in the Technology Commercialization division. Rempel is currently President of the Calgary Nose-hill Conservative Association, co-chair of both the Conservative National Policy Committee, Alberta’s CPC President’s Council, and was the co-chair of the 2010 inaugural Alberta Congress.

Butt graduated from Mount Royal University in Calgary with a Bachelor of Business Administration. He later went to Queensland, Australia to complete a doctorate of law at Bond University. He is fluent in four languages and has a strong desire to reinstate privacy rights and seniors benefits to the Calgary Nose Hill community. Butt says, “Politics is a new word given to the term governance, which is actually what politics is all about.”

Robert Prcic | Liberal

Prcic is the owner of GTR Auto, a custom performance shop for cars, in Calgary’s southwest. He graduated from the University of Calgary after studying Law and Society, and was a player on the University basketball team. He now coaches Calgary Selects Basketball. And previously ran as a candidate of the Alberta Liberal Party.

Laurie Scheer | Green Party

Scheer was born and raised in Calgary. He attended both SAIT and the University of Calgary for Engineering, later going on to become a self-employed engineer. Scheer is a avid supporter of the local Calgary art and music scene. Scheer says, “Politics is a way of managing social issues and society in general. As an enterprise, it’s the way we organize things and make sure they run smoothly.”

Calgary Nose Hill at a glance

The Nose Hill riding was formerly known as the Calgary-Mackay-Nose Hill riding in 2011, some areas have been taken out and a few new areas such as Huntington Hills has been added.

The riding was home for 42,535 people in 2011 with a good mix of gender, nearly a 50/50 split. Middle-aged individuals hold the majority of the votes in this riding, as 29.6% of the population is 25-44 and 28.8% are 45-64.

The riding has favoured the Conservatives substantially, as Tory voting strength has increased in each of the past three votes.

However, no matter who wins this vote the MP will be a new face in Nose Hill, as incumbent Diane Alblonczy recently stepped down, paving the way for new PC candidate Michelle Rempel.

Some demographic information in this area:

  • 50% of those over the age of 15 in this riding are married.
  • 77.3% of those in this riding speak English as their primary language, and only 0.6% is French.
  • 92.5% are Canadian citizens.
  • Average family income was just over $100,000 at $103,582.
