A Valentine’s Day special concert, Immortal Beloved, was held by the Calgary Civic Symphony on Feb. 10 at the Jack Singer Concert Hall.
The Calgary Civic Symphony is a local orchestra consisting of musicians, some of which are amateurs and some who are professionals.
Most members of the Calgary Civic Symphony have careers outside of doing music, with diversity in professions.
The programme of Immortal Beloved consisted of Kevin Lau’s For Home, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, Percy Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry (Danny Boy), Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise and Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture from Romeo and Juliet.
For Home was written by Lau based on his personal experiences with falling in love.
Symphony No. 7 is a classic piece, composed by Beethoven, who was known to have sent letters to his “immortal beloved.”
Irish Tune is a folk song harmonious with the theme of the concert. Vocalise was composed by Rachmaninoff in 1915 which concluded his 14 Romances, Op. 34.
Finally, Romeo and Juliet by Tchaikovsky highlight the tragedy of two lovers.
These works are regarded by the Calgary Civic Symphony as “some of the most beloved and romantic music ever written.”
The next performance by the Calgary Civic Symphony titled Fantastic Firebird will be held on April 7th at Jack Singer Concert Hall.
