Lead designer Lynette MacDonald strives to make her cakes turn out as perfect as possible, which is why the bakery has won multiple awards for their cakes, and baked for major events in Calgary.

One of them was Cirque du Soleil’s Amaluna.

“They were having their first year anniversary while they were here in town. So they really wanted to commemorate that and have a celebration for everyone involved in the production,” says MacDonald. “All the artists, they thought it was something that props had made, because it resembled a lot of the elements in the story so well. So that was really cool.”

Whether the chefs are baking multiple orders a time, or focusing on one large order like a five-foot cake, they are always working with consistency.

“With SWIRL, the ingredients are always the highest quality and we can control what goes into everything,” says Amanda Jones, a chef at SWIRL.

“So if you were to read [the] ingredients [on a] box of cake mix, there’s all kinds of stuff in there. It’s not just flour, sugar, milk and eggs.”

SWIRL has also been featured on “The Big Bake” on Food Network Canada, where they competed with other baking teams in creating seasonally-themed cakes.

With baking shows like these rising in popularity, custom cakes are an art that is becoming more appreciated with each look, bite, and flavour!
