What’s something you cannot hold but you can break it? Is it promises, hearts maybe? One thing you can’t break is the spirit of the Cornerstone Youth Centre.
Housed in a grey bungalow sitting on the corner of a busy intersection in the heart of Mayland Heights, a neighbourhood in northeast Calgary, Cornerstone has been providing services and supporting youths in the community for three decades.
The Cornerstone Youth Centre offers free lunch and afterschool programs to kids in grades five to nine. Through these programs they are able to establish trusted relationships with youth that not only focus on early-intervention, but also instil healthy life-long habits.
Because of the centre’s commitment to their community and the offering free services, Cornerstone is often left out of the conversation when it comes to donations from private donors or the distribution of government funding.
Listen to A Place Kids Can Feel At Home: The Cornerstone podcast to find out how this organization has stood against the odds and employed creative methods to raise funding while keeping the youth as their priority.
