The Calgary Cavalry Football Club defeated the Hamilton Forge Football club and won the North Star Cup. This is the Cavalry’s first North Star Cup win in the six years it has been awarded in the Canadian Premier League.
The Cavalry were last in the finals in 2019 where they were defeated by Forge who had won the North Star Cup four of the last five seasons leading up to the 2024 final. Cavalry’s head coach, Tommy Wheeldon Jr., said his team has not forgotten the last time they were this close to capturing the cup.
“Lots of differences this year,” said Wheeldon Jr.. It could be the same opponent, but it’s a different battleground. It’ll be different players that weren’t here last year. We were in a different position in the league last year. We’ve also brought the battle back to our place.”
The two teams finished the regular season with the first and second best records. Forge finished first with a record of 15 wins, five draws and eight losses. While the Cavalry secured 12 wins, 12 draws and four losses.
Excited to celebrate, returning Cavalry players said this win is a long time coming and could be just the beginning for the club.
