A lavish date night might not feel complete without dinner, drinks and music, and that often comes with expenses not everyone can afford. But right here in Calgary, Alvin’s Jazz Club provides a rare chance for a fancy night out that won’t break the bank.

Stepping inside the club, guests are greeted with warm ambient lighting, a glowing dance floor and a wide selection of cocktails. This New York-inspired getaway, with its mid-century contemporary vibe, is both fresh and inviting.

“There’s not a lot of live music venues in Calgary, let alone for jazz,” says Assistant Manager Michelle Dudley. “I think the price point is super valuable for the quality of the experience that you’re receiving when you come here and see the bands and taste the food from the chef.”

Located in the Westman Village of Mahogany, guests can expect live music every night, with a cover charge ranging from only $5 to $10, depending on the event. With expert mixologists and decorated chefs, the night feels like a million bucks, but it isn’t priced that way.

Dudley explains why affordable prices are a core value at Alvin’s.

“We’ve created a space that reaches all age demographics. You can come here as a young couple on a date night, and we have a lot of seniors that come back to enjoy… the jazz from their time,” says Dudley. “It kind of has something for everybody.”

Fitting with the vibe of the club, Alvin’s encourages guests to adhere to their business casual dress code. This is not strictly enforced, though, and anyone who is dressed neatly and put together is accepted with open arms.

This atmosphere has been carefully curated since the doors first opened in 2019. Dudley explains that the owner, Jay Westman, designed the club in honour of his jazz-enthusiast father.

Bringing a unique theme to Calgary’s restaurant scene, this club offers more than colourful culture to the community. Supporting local talent, Alvin’s often hires independent musicians to and give them a platform to perform and grow.

Egor Ukoloff is a professional pianist with many achievements in jazz. His music is elegant and powerful, and when he plays guests can expect to be transported to the Big Apple. Ukoloff plays solo or joins forces with bands and other musicians in the club who are scheduled to perform throughout the evening to encourage a variety of music.

A hub for community and growth, Alvin’s is one of the only places in the city where young people can develop a love of jazz music while musicians simultaneously develop their talents. It stands out as a rare treat for the senses and people wanting something different than regular clubs and bars. It may even be the gateway for a lifelong love of the music genre.

“If you get exposed to good jazz, you cannot stay away,” says Ukoloff.
