Rock climbing, a sport that involves using either natural rock or artificial resin to navigate an ascending route, is seen as a sport pursued by adrenaline junkies.

However, for some young adults and students at Mount Royal University, the appeal of climbing lies in the de-stressor and mental game instead. With the student-accessible climbing wall at MRU and various climbing gyms scattered across the city, it’s easy to find a venue and begin the climb.

Students looking to pursue rookie climbing at MRU may find time between classes or after a long day of studying. Boulder Elevated offers multiple free-climb walls and exercise equipment for those who may be more experienced or looking for a challenge.

Research suggests that while rock climbing is a thrill, it is also highly beneficial for increasing brain power. Although the sport is physically demanding, 80 per cent of the work is mental. With its demand for focus and attention, rock climbing is also seen as therapeutic.

Watch below to see how three MRU students use rock climbing as a stress reliever and a form of exercise.
