Calgary’s Alberta University of the Arts is hosting its annual Winter Show and Sale on Nov. 14th and 15th, featuring never-before-seen art demonstrations showcasing the skills and techniques used in some of the work available at the market.

The non-profit two-day event provides students with the opportunity to showcase and sell artwork while creating a vibrant and engaging space for community members.

The first day of the art show runs from 4 to 8 p.m., and is the First Look Fundraiser, with $10 tickets available online or at the door.

With a live student DJ and a wide variety of artwork, patrons can immerse themselves in Calgary’s arts culture.

“You can more formally interact with all of our artists and get to ask them questions, as well as visit different booths,” said event manager Juli Song.

The second day of the art show is Family Day, running from 10 to 4 p.m., with tickets available for $10 or entry by donation to their student pantry.

Song says the Family Day art demonstrations want to foster a connection between local emerging artists and the community.

There will be exhibits like natural fabric dying and clay sculpting. There’s something for the whole family to enjoy.

“We like to provide a little bit of everything for different parts or members of our community,” said Song.

Ceyda-anne Altiok, a student artist who will be showcasing and selling their art, has been preparing since the beginning of September.

As a multi-disciplinary artist majoring in illustration, Altoik has been working on digital prints, stickers, pins, and more.

Altoik is excited to showcase their hard work after months of preparation.

“It’s one of the best privileges of being an artist to be able to see people interact and admire your work and want to purchase your work. It’s something really special to us,” said Altiok.

All proceeds from ticket sales and commissions go right back to the students — funding subsidies and contributing to the student community pantry.

Song says the annual event is more than just a two-day event, but is a six to eight-week program that teaches students how to maintain a small business, package and price their work, and navigate contracts and legal agreements.

“Students here are working really hard within the six to eight weeks, not just to prepare their work, but also as a learning and professional development opportunity,” said Song.

The event provides an opportunity for everyone in the Calgary area to interact with and support local artists.
