Towing abandoned cars on the main highway connecting a northeastern Alberta city to Edmonton continues today, after dozens became stuck in a major snowstorm.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, where Fort McMurray is located, says in a Saturday statement it has sent buses, food and water to help people still stranded on Highway 63 after a significant spring storm on Friday.

It says the highway remains impassable, and first responders are checking all stranded vehicles to ensure people are safe.

Dozens got stranded after a major snowstorm and high winds hit Alberta on Friday, with Highway 63 in the north seeing up to 60 centimetres of snow in some parts.

Wood Buffalo says work to free vehicles from snowdrifts continues, and abandoned vehicles are being temporarily towed.

It says buses will take stranded people back to Fort McMurray, where they can arrange rides home.
