A cyberattack has left most of Mount Royal University’s main website, telephone services, and the MyMRU portal offline since Wednesday, leaving students and faculty unable to access most of the university’s systems.

An update report sent to students and faculty acknowledges the severity of the incident as the university works with cybersecurity experts to resolve the incident.

“Yesterday, the University advised the community that it was experiencing technical disruptions affecting certain systems. We can now confirm that those disruptions are the result of a cyber incident,” the report said.

“The investigation is still in its early stages. At this time, we have not determined whether any personal information or other data was accessed or taken. If the investigation determines that information has been affected, we will notify impacted individuals as appropriate.”

This incident has also been reported to law enforcement.

This security breach comes during exam season, but students with exams are instructed to proceed to their designated exam location and time despite the systems being offline.

Google services, including Google Drive and Gmail, remain online for both students and faculty members, and students are recommended to contact their instructors or the Office of the Registrar to sort any exam-related questions, including accessibility options for their upcoming exams.

Aside from the technical systems being down, the university also reports that a temporary network has been established to be used on campus. Both the alarm and fire detection systems are functioning properly.
