A Calgary nonprofit thrift shop is seeing a sharp rise in demand as more families turn to it for support. The Women in Need Society (WINS) provides women and their families with clothing and household items, sometimes at no cost.

CEO Karen Ramchuck said those who qualify can use vouchers at checkout, allowing their shop to be free of charge while maintaining their dignity. However, as the cost of living continues to rise, so have waitlists.

“So right now, the need for our help and services, we’re seeing about a 30 to 40 per cent increase,” said Ramchuck.

Ramchuck said WINS also offers parenting workshops, employment programs, financial and digital literacy training and many other resources.

WINS relies on community donations, they are especially in need of things like furniture, winter clothing, and men’s apparel.
