Mount Royal University’s Bissett School of Business hosts Col. Chris Hadfield next week for a discussion about leadership and sustainability, drawing on his experience as an astronaut, a Royal Canadian Air Force colonel, a test pilot, and the first Canadian commander of the International Space Station.
Organizer Leah Hamilton, vice-dean of research and community relations at the Bissett School of Business, says Hadfield will discuss his approach to leadership, shaped by his multidisciplinary life experiences.
“I’m hoping that students and the broader community can learn from someone who has commanded the International Space Station and operated at the intersection of extreme technology, environmental constraints, rapid change and uncertainty,” said Hamilton in an interview with the Calgary Journal.

Hamilton hopes that hearing from someone who has dealt with high-stress situations, such as being a fighter pilot or a space pilot, can be useful for students.
“Perhaps he’ll have lessons on how to stay calm and resilient, and make these really hard decisions, in the face of the types of circumstances that lead to stress, anxiety and uncertainty,” said Hamilton.
“I hope that we feel inspired to work together in a cross-disciplinary way to solve some of these complex systems-level challenges that we all face,” said Hamilton about the goals of bringing together the community for Hadfield’s talk. Hamilton also hopes that the conversation with Hadfield will inspire attendees to work together across disciplines to solve the complex challenges we all face.
The event on Oct. 6, 2026, at Ross Glen Hall will feature a conversation with Hadfield, a book signing, and a Q&A where the audience can ask Hadfield about his experiences as an astronaut, a business leader, and more. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.
