The Calgary Journal is a community news service produced by students and supported by faculty and staff at Mount Royal University’s Journalism & Digital Media program. We tell multimedia stories about our city that you won’t find anywhere else and provide a supportive environment for emerging journalists to publish their work.

Jana Abbara

Sports Editor

Jana Abbara is in her final year of Journalism & Digital Media, Jana is passionate about multimedia storytelling, and has experience in photography, video production, and digital editing. She brings a fresh lens to sports storytelling highlighting the athletes, communities, and cultural stories that shape Calgary’s sports scene. A Syrian-Canadian journalist, she aims to amplify diverse voices and inspire young women. More by Jana Abbara

Janine de Castro

Treaty 7 Editor

Janine de Castro specializes in sharing the stories of artists who create in various forms. She especially highlights minority artists and how culture intertwines with art by observing them during their craft or attending community events. When she is not focusing on her studies, she is working on personal projects such as creative direction and freelancing. More by Janine de Castro


Emma Marshall

News / Podcast Editor

Currently in her final semester of Journalism & Digital Media, Emma Marshall has reported everything from in-depth features to live festival coverage. Last summer, she led CJSW’s podcast series covering the 2025 municipal election, and she now serves as Publishing Editor at The Reflector. More by Emma Marshall

Emma Miller is a fourth-year journalism student who is passionate about infusing historical perspectives into her reporting and using audio as a creative and effective storytelling method. Daria is a Newsletter Editor at The Calgary Journal while completing the final semester of her Journalism & Digital Media degree. She is also the Associate Editor at FashionX Magazine, and will continue to work in the field of fashion journalism beyond graduation. Sarah Palmer

News / Photo Editor

Sarah Palmer is in her final year of Journalism and Digital Media at MRU. In 2025, she interned at LiveWire Calgary as a multimedia reporter, covering breaking news, municipal politics, and community events. Long-form feature stories exposing injustice are Palmer’s professional passion, and she hopes to pursue investigative journalism in the future. Social Media/Video Editor

Mia Smith is in her fifth and final year of Journalism & Digital Media with a minor in Marketing at MRU. She has a passion for all things digital media. She is currently freelancing for local businesses and artists in Calgary for all things social media, as well as acting as the Web Editor at MRU’s independent newspaper, the Reflector.
