Calgary Journal

Summer is officially over, and the universe is returning back to its ground-state.Β

Pumpkin spice is back. Leaves linger on trees only when the wind isn’t blowing. New students yell about parking tickets.

More importantly, the Calgary Journal is back to our regular publication schedule!

Well, almost. We’re getting there.

On The Docket

  • The green line is dead, long live the green line.
  • Calgary has cool things happening. You should go to them.
  • We can’t get sued for croissant slander if its the truth.

And more! At least a little bit!

Keep updated as we get back underway by following us on twitter, as seen below.

β€”Kobe Gallagher Tulloch, your newsletter editor for the semester. I’ll introduce myself more formally at some point here, but for now, I’ll let you get to know me by my general wit and charm.

The End of the Line

Last week, city council voted to wind down the Green Line LRT, announcing it will cost a total of $2.1 billion to do it. The money pit megaproject has become the proverbial thorn in the city’s side, sparking new tensions between the city and the province over the project’s rising costs, shrinking scope and end of provincial funding.

The most recent budget put project costs at over $6.2 billion, up from previous estimates of around $5.5 billion. But amid all these projections, how much has the city actually spent on the Green Line? Well, prior to 2021, the city spent around $650 million on the LRT project. As the chart below shows, since then costs-to-date now sit at $1.3 billion.

Meet the Masthead

Each of our weekly newsletters will include a chance to get to know a member of brand new editorial team a little better. Meet Alex, our environmental editor.

Kobe Tulloch: Can you introduce yourself for me?

Alex Janz: Hi! I’m Alex Janz, I’m the environmental editor for the Calgary Journal.

What brought you into journalism?

Initially, I’ve just always liked writing. Whether it be writing fun little fiction stories when I was younger, or stuff like that. I got really into documentary making, I thought that was really cool. It capitvated me a lot. So I decided, β€˜Hey, why not take journalism, become a documentary maker!’ Now I’m kind of switiching away from that to writing again. Yeah.

Do you have a favourite piece that you’ve had published in the journal?

I do! I wrote a piece about finding the best croissant in Calgary. I evicerated some of those bakeries, but I found the best croissant.

Where was the worst croissant?

Oh it was from [REDACTED]. It was like the italian bread from Subway. It was crazy.
