Tucked into a corner that was off limits and under construction, one of the British Museum’s most disputed displays still captured the undivided attention of visitors. The Caryatid statue is one of six that stood together atop the Acropolis of Athens and was taken in 1804 by Thomas Bruce, the seventh Lord of Elgin. The other five statues are currently on display in the Acropolis Museum, with an honorary space kept empty between them in hopes that the British Museum will return the statue and reunite them in their place of origin.
