Good morning Calgary and community,
It’s now midway through March, which means it’s time to check up on the post-secondary students in your life who are scrambling to meet deadlines they’ve known about since January and starting to question what compelled them to pursue higher learning in the first place. They may not have the luxury of time or energy for the next few weeks, but that doesn’t mean they won’t return to you after finals.
In the mean time, you could remind them of your continued support by leaving an energy drink at their doorstep. Just make sure to depart quickly before you catch a glimpse of your unshowered friend with their eyes glazed over from staring at the same screen for hours, head aching from too… much… learning.

In the city
March 16 & 19
This week โ see the Calgary Hitmen face off against the Edmonton Oil Kings then the Red Deer Rebels at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
March 17
Saint Patrick’s Day is on a Monday โ but that won’t keep the real fans of Irish culture from celebrating. One this special occasion, you have the unique opportunity to start the morning with an $8 Guinness from St James Corner Restaurant and Irish Pub and see where the day takes you.
March 18 & 25
If you’ve ever gazed up at the Calgary Tower and wondered how long it would take to climb the stairs to the top, we have very good news for you. Every Tuesday in March the tower’s stairwell is open for business from 4-7 p.m. It’s called the 802 Challenge because, we assume, that’s how much you’d be willing to pay for an elevator ride after climbing the stairs halfway.
Until March 30
In more good news, Calgary is “one of the most fertile spots in North America for ground-breaking puppetry,” according to the Festival of Animated Objects. You can check out their plays and films until the end of March.
In the country:
A quick recap on big news events of the week:
- After announcing taxes on Ontario electricity exports to the U.S., Premier Doug Ford urged Alberta to do the same with oil exports, but retaliatory measures against Trump’s tariffs are not in Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s plans. CTV
- Ford suspended Ontario’s electricity export tax when offered a meeting with U.S. commerce secretary. After the “productive” meeting this Thursday, Ford said he felt optimistic about negotiations going forward. Meanwhile, Trump doesn’t seem to be backing down on tariffs or threats of annexation. CBC
- Trudeau’s replacement was sworn in as prime minister this week and is expected to announce a re-election in the next several days. Liberals have been polling higher with new leader Mark Carney, but if he doesn’t win the (likely) spring election, his short time as prime minister will set a new record. CBC
