Mark Lawes on why space is an issue for artists
In 2005, Mark Lawes the current Artistic Director for The Grand Theatre, was kicked out of the Jubilee’s basement as it was getting renovated. Lawes and his theatre group were going through what many artists do on a day-to-day basis: A struggle for public space.
Lawes rediscovered Theatre Junction Grand building and fought hard to restore the space as a theatre. What once held the oldest theatre in Calgary, had been turned into an indoor golf driving range, and it was time to make a change. For Lawes, it’s been a challenging and rewarding journey.
Lawes expresses his passion for the theatre. He expresses the need for more public space for artists in a selfless manner, as he believes it’s beneficial to society.
