Society hosts first traditional dance workshop

The Peruvian Rhythms Society has held their first public workshop at the Hillhurst Community Association. The society, staffed by volunteers, teaches both Peruvians and non-Peruvians traditional dances.

Lead instructor Milagros Rocca says the group wants to engage the Calgary community to promote Peruvian cultural and historical traditions through dance.

“I started with the Peruvian Cultural Association, and they gave me the opportunity to be a part of teaching dances and performing in different areas around Calgary,” Rocca says. “Now we are our own non-profit organization.”

“Because I am a teacher,” Rocca added, “it’s a gift to share my skills and teach everything about Peruvian dance.”

As a result of the high turnout, the society will have to find a new location for the next workshop.
