The Municipal Complex Atrium was lively with tables being claimed by attendees ready to eat their free pancake breakfast. The gathering took place just outside the City Council Chamber on Apr. 11, 2024. The Parkinson Association of Alberta was responsible for the event held in honour of April being Parkinson’s awareness month.

Christina Kim, head of events for Alberta Parkinson’s, explained what the event is about: “Celebrating people coming together, letting people know about Parkinsons disease. It is one of the fastest neurological disorders in the world. And a lot of people don’t know that.”

Those who attended where encouraged to participate in the Sit ‘n Stand challenge, describes as: “The transitional movement going from a seated position to an upright standing position. They are a full body exercise that improves mobility, balance and strength for your whole body.”

Kim says that the Sit ‘n Stand is a great exercise for everyone, but it also provides an exercise that can help ease symptoms of tremors often associated with Parkinson’s.
