The MRU Music Club rocked the night away at their last open mic of the year that took place at West Gate Social on March 19.
The Music Club, created this year, has over 70 members in their Discord server, and hopes to get even more people to join in the fall of 2025. Sukhmani Minhas, vice president of events for the club, was in charge of the open mic event.
“I’ve always been super involved in music, dance, fine arts, ever since I was super young,” said Minhas. “Coming to university, I thought there would be a broader scope of musical clubs [to join] because I’m a psychology major so I can’t really pursue that within my career.”
But with no student groups focused on music, Minhas said, “Why not get together with a few people that are interested in making one and do it.”
Liam Sutherland, a Music Club member, was a participant in the open mic event and believes that the club is the perfect place for students that are interested in music.
“I’ve played guitar most of my life and I thought it would be a cool opportunity to meet people who are also into music. It’s low risk, there’s no payment, there’s no fee, and even if you don’t play an instrument, it’s just fun to meet people who like the same genre as you or just find friends on campus.”
In the fall semester, the Music Club plans on hosting open mic events every month, as well as other fun activities like jam sessions, fundraising events and workshops.
Whether you’ve played on stages in front of large audiences, or are just a music enjoyer, the Music Club may be the place for you.
