A new club at Mount Royal University (MRU), called Sisterhood in Action (SIA), hosted a date-decorating event on March 18, 2025, at the Council Chambers in Wyckham House.
SIA is a Muslim sisters-founded group that hopes to create an inclusive space for students to lead, grow, and network. The event occurred during the month of Ramadan, where Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset — dates are traditionally eaten to break the fast.

Students of all faiths gathered to decorate dates to take home and to hand out to janitors, along with a thank-you card at the end of the event.
One of SIA’s executives, Samrah Afsar, says events like this help create a common space for students to connect.
“Our mission is to create a safe and inclusive space for everyone on campus to connect, lead, grow, and network.”
Toka Hassan, an attendee of the event, hopes for more events like this in the future.
“It’s nice to have a place where everyone can get together, meet new people, and talk,” Hassan said. “I don’t think there are enough events like this on campus.”

Since its inauguration, the Sisterhood in Action club has hosted two student events, including an end-of-semester Ramadan dinner for MRU faculty and staff.
Calgary Journal videographer Sadaf Karami captured the date-decorating event in action.
