Protesters gathered outside city hall in Calgary in support of the city’s first rally for Sudan, calling for an immediate ceasefire and sanctions on the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Laila Malik and Heam Mohamed founded Together For Sudan (TFS) and organized the rally on Oct. 26.

“We want the community and people to raise awareness about what’s going on in Sudan,” Mohamed said. “We are being killed for our gold, for our natural resources by the UAE.”

People of all ages attended the rally, holding signs and waving Sudanese and Canadian flags.

“We want people to know that Sudan is currently in a war, and it’s not a civil war. It is a war that is funded and fully run by the UAE,” Mohamed said.
