Voters in Calgary-Shaw elected New Democrat Kyle Campbell to the Alberta Legislative Assembly on Monday.
Unofficial results from Elections Alberta show Campbell beating the United Conservative Party candidate Mike Derry by 582 votes in the byelection made necessary when former UCP MLA and environment minister Rebecca Schultz resigned her seat earlier this year.
NDP leader Naheed Nenshi celebrated the win on X, saying the result “shows that Alberta’s New Democrats are building huge momentum in Calgary, and that there is no safe UCP seat in Calgary.”
The southwest Calgary riding, which includes the neighbourhoods of Legacy, Wolf Willow and Silverado, has been a longtime conservative stronghold. The governing UCP won the riding in both the 2019 and 2023 general elections.
The NDP held the riding from 2015 to 2019.
Meanwhile, Progressive Tory candidate Kyle Joseph came in third place with 978 votes, Liberal candidate John Roggeveen received 602 votes, and Independent candidate Rolly Ashdown had 82 votes.
Campbell says he looks forward to representing the constituency at the provincial level, while Smith congratulated Campbell on social media and thanked Derry for his work during the campaign.
Elections Alberta will confirm official results on Sept. 24.
