Howdy everyone, it’s Mofe and Zach, your newsletter editors.
It feels like just a few weeks ago was the start of the month, and that’s because it was. Time sure passes quickly doesn’t it?
It’s reading break for university students this week so we hope you are all getting the rest you need to recharge for the rest of the semester. Maybe getting to sleep in bed a little later in the morning this week is as refreshing for you as going to the spa, cheaper too!
Jokes aside it is still Black History Month so we want to draw your attention to an organization that gets attention for its work in the advancement of Black people in the US court of law. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded February 12, 1909, directly after the 1908 race riots in Springfield, Illinois. The area had boiled over in tense race relations resulting in a bloody collision leading to the loss of black life, property and safety. Appalled by the events of that day, 60 individuals signed up to create what is now the NAACP. Notable amongst them were civil rights leader and preacher Martin Luther King, Jr, historian and writer, Carter G. Woodson and suffragette journalist, Mary White Ovington.
Most of the founding members were white and only six were black but they created a civil rights group that was dedicated to removing all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes and legal action.

Artist highlight
This week’s artist highlight is Beni Johnson, who has been featured on the Calgary Journal News website before. He is the creator of 10 at 10, an organization that covers rap and hip-hop artists from Canada, hosts events and provides support for new hip-hop artists in the country.
The platform showcases talent of all kinds, rappers, musicians, writers, and other creators of art on a platform that aims to spread their talents and be a hub for outreach and documentation of artists in the city. Johnson graduated from SAIT and then created his own media company that started small with showcases from musicians around the city. Not only is he a founder, but he is also a professional musician who has toured all over Canada and seems to be a multi-hyphenate with an emphasis on hip-hop and design. You can find more of his work here.
