Have you heard there’s some sort of election going on?

By Kobe Gallagher Tulloch, Newsletter editor

October holidays have come and gone, and although we’re already in the planning stages for our newsletter’s Christmas edition, (Alex absolutely has more recipes for baked goods coming your way) November is starting with politics as the talk of the town.

The presidential election down south has captured the attention of Canadian news outlets nationwide, and locally (well, as local as you consider Red Deer) the conservative leadership review has come and gone.

We’re helping start your week by keeping you informed of what’s going on, and what you can do around the city to take your mind off everything we just kept you informed about.

On the docket

  • A pretty important Tuesday
  • The UCP might just be fans of Danielle Smith. Maybe.
  • Our photo editor doesn’t know how old fifth graders are

We really value your support. We want to give back! Please enter to win $100 by taking our active living survey so we can send a little love back the way of a Calgary Journal diehard.

We had to talk about it at some point

By Kelsea Arnett, News editor

Tomorrow, U.S. voters head to the polls to decide whether Vice-President Kamala Harris or Donald Trump will become the next president. The race has been extremely tight, with the New York Times’ poll tracker showing neither candidate leading by more than a single percentage point, both nationwide and in key battleground states.

Around 70 per cent of Canadians are interested in this election, according to a recent Leger survey. With this election shaping up to be a doozy, we’ve rounded up some key stories to get you set for election night — and its results.

In other news:

  • A different kind of election took place this weekend. Facing a leadership review at the UCP’s annual general meeting on Saturday, Premier Danielle Smith received 91 per cent of the vote, solidifying her continued place as the party’s leader.
  • The Alberta government tabled three bills last Thursday regarding gender, sexuality and identity, including limiting access to gender-affirming treatment for youth and banning transgender athletes from women’s and girl’s sports. If passed, the laws will be the most restrictive in Canada.

The Alberta Energy Regulator decided last week Pathways Alliance’s $16 billion carbon capture plan won’t need a provincial environmental assessment plan, which has First Nations, residents and environmental groups concerned.

Meet the masthead

Meet Chevine, the Journal’s Photo editor!

Kobe Tulloch: Can you introduce yourself for me?

Chevine Holloway: I’m Chevine Holloway, from the Stoney Nakoda Nation, and I’m a fourth year journalism student here at MRU.

What brought you into journalism?

Well to be honest, when I started here at MRU, I didn’t really have any plans for my future. I just wanted to go to school so I wasn’t stuck at home. COVID just happened, I didn’t want to be stuck at home doing nothing. I really like photography, and everybody I was working with at the time was like ‘you should take journalism!’

Do you have a favourite piece you’ve gotten published on the journal?

My first piece is probably still my favourite piece. I’m still really close with the source, we’ve become really good friends. I just like being able to see him grow in his field, and me grow in my field, it just means a lot to me to see that story.

How many fifth graders do you think you could take in a physical altercation?

30.
