Over the past few years, we have seen massive redevelopments in older communities. How would Mayor Nenshi ensure those redevelopments achieve the necessary improvements, yet still maintain the character of those communities?
One of my highest priorities for 2012 is a major review of the planning and development system. Plan It Calgary laid out a strong vision for the future of Calgary, which includes sensitively redeveloping existing communities. But in order to meaningfully achieve that vision of positive development and also maintain the things we all like about our existing communities, we need to improve the tools, regulations and planning processes we already have to realize good redevelopment. In many cases, communities experiencing redevelopment either don’t have an Area Redevelopment Plan or have one that is decades old. We need to modernize our planning regime and we are in the process of putting together a proposal to make that happen.
