The annual Crowchild Classic took place at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Jan. 24. Both the men’s and women’s hockey teams from Mount Royal University and the University of Calgary took the ice in the yearly event.

In the first game, the men’s teams fought in front of nearly 10,000 fans until the bitter end, in a game that would see MRU win 3-2 in a shootout. Although the score was close, MRU outplayed the U of C throughout the game, registering 41 shots to Calgary’s 20.

After the opener, the women’s teams took the ice at 7:30 p.m. Gabriella Durante stood tall in net for the U of C, making all 21 saves on the way to a 2-0 win. The Dinos added an empty-net goal with just five seconds left to play.

All four teams ended their seasons with losses in the Canada West playoffs, where UBC eventually advanced to the national finals in both men’s and women’s.
