It’s the end of the semester here at MRU, and it’s time to say goodbye. We’ve still got tons of new content for you, though, and our editors are working around the clock this week to publish the final stories of the semester.

In this newsletter

  • Goodbye from our editors
  • Ageing in Calgary series
  • The end of CBC?
  • New fact checks and explainers
  • Lots of profiles!

And more!

Saying Goodbye

The newsletter is a key part of showcasing our work at the Calgary Journal, and it would be nothing without it’s readers. I’ve had a lot of fun writing the newsletter for you this year, thank you so much for taking the time to read it with us every week. It’s been a great semester with amazing content from our writers, and so much dedication from our editors, and there’s still so much more content and talent to be showcased in future newsletters for you. Thank you!

– Alyssa Hassett

Being a newsletter editor this past semester has been an honour, and it’s time to say goodbye. Don’t worry – we always have young talent coming up the Calgary Journal pipeline, and next semester, you’ll have a new team of people to keep this thing going. I hope you have enjoyed the newsletter as I have enjoyed writing it. We say a version of this every week, but we are truly grateful for your readership.

Ageing in Calgary

Our journalism students in our community-centred journalism class have been hard at work creating a series of stories documenting the challenges and opportunities seniors are currently facing while ageing in Calgary. Check out their series here.

Fact-checing

Our investigative journalists have also been very busy lately, and we’ve got lots of new fact-checking stories for you to delve into. From information on forest fires to health supplements to reality TV, we’ve got you covered. Check out our fact checks here.

The end of CBC?

Join us at MRU to watch a debate on the future of CBC in the face of the upcoming federal election, as the leadership of the Conservative party has threatened to defund the CBC if elected. Rupa Subramanya (The Free Press) and Max Fawcett (Canada’s National Observer) will debate the possible end of the CBC on April 16th from 7-8:30 p.m in the Ross Glen Hall at MRU. RSVP to the debate here.
